Looking Back on Foresight

Last week, Quail Creek Reservoir in Washington County celebrated it's thirtieth anniversary. Construction of the dam was completed on September 20, 1985, when the county's population totaled about 35,000. Today, with a population topping 151,000, it is easy to see that planners and residents alike had the foresight to plan for the future.

According to Fox 13, the reservoir has a storage capacity of 40,325 acre-feet of water and provides 518 jobs to the area. It supplies 6.5 billion gallons of potable water annually to residents of Washington County.

Looking to the future, it is estimated that the county's population will reach 300,000 by 2030 and planners are once again using foresight to plan ahead. The main project in this area is the state-funded Lake Powell Pipeline, which is still in the planning phase. Water district managers say as they look forward to providing for future water needs, continued efforts toward conservation are also a large part of that equation.
