For Utah general contractors it’s beginning to look like Christmas
Published November 20th, 2012

Fall is coming to a close and there are more cold days and also a few warm days. The leaves have mostly fallen from the trees and frost is often seen on the lawns in the mornings. Soon there’ll be snow on the ground and the first signs of Christmas will be here. As a Utah general contractor there are things that you should be doing this Christmas season.

One aspect that you can be looking at as a general contractor during this time of the year is what services you can offer your customers. Winterization is always a good service to offer customers year round. Some customers however are unable to afford your services at other times of the year. Or some customers put off winterization for other to-do list activities. The first sign of a cold weather utility bill may inspire them to look for somebody to help them make their house warmer.

In order to help customers avoid this issue, you may want to consider advertising winterization projects on your blog or social media sites. In November, creating newsletter that offers suggestions on how customers can keep their homes warmer this winter and see a decrease in utility costs can be beneficial. Then you can offer them help with either advice or a consultation to find out how you could help them make their house more weather efficient.

Another good service to offer to companies and individuals is snow removal. Snow removal can mean more than just clearing driveways or shoveling out sidewalks. It can also mean clearing roofs of businesses and residences from snow buildup. If large amounts of snow remain on the roofs of buildings it can cause damage. If you have a period of snow, thaw and then more snow the buildup can be very damaging to the roof. Some roofs have even collapsed under the weight of a heavy snow.

In addition to offering new services to your customers in order to keep them safe and warm over the holidays, you should also take this time to look inward. You can look at your own business strategies and determine what you want to do to improve your business in the upcoming year. You don’t need to wait until January 1 to create your New Year’s resolution. Creating a plan on how to improve your business can begin earlier and be more efficient at the time the New Year rolls around.

Part of your New Year’s resolution strategy creation should include looking at the year that has passed. Looking at this year’s benefits, disadvantages, and profit margins can help you determine where you need to improve next year. While looking at the past may not always seem beneficial, business history is always an important analytic when looking forward.

As a general contractor in the state of Utah, personal growth is as important as business growth. Utah requires that general contractors have accumulated a certain amount of credit hours before renewing their general contractor’s license. If the end of the year is looming and you find yourself short on credit hours, you should find ways to take courses between now and the end of the year. This way you will be prepared when the New Year dawns and you need to renew your general contractor’s license.

UTCLC can help you with classes in business to help you qualify to renew your license. If you are a subcontractor and are looking at becoming a general contractor next year there is no time to start like the present. UTCLC can help you study for the Utah general contractors licensing exam. Once you have passed your exam UTCLC can help you create your new business so you can start January 1 as the owner of your own company.
